Medicare is a Maltese healthcare management systems specialist and staffing agency, with over eleven years’ experience of local public and private healthcare operations. Medicare enjoys an excellent standing among Maltese medical and paramedical professional circles, being also an effective lobby group for change strategies in local healthcare.

Our Story
Medicare services the manpower and project requirements of the Maltese health sector – private hospitals/clinics, nursing homes, hospitality industry, institutions and Government bodies, and mass events. We operate a bank of specialist, medical and paramedical staff with expertise ranging from emergency medicine to sports injuries and occupational health & safety. Our experience in high profile clinical management agreements, as at the Civil Prisons, Asylum Seekers Detention centres and Asylum Seekers Open Centres, have built our reputation as turnkey providers of effective health management solutions.
Nursing
Our nursing pool is carefully vetted and is made up of registered and highly qualified staff, most of whom trained in high-dependency units in the National Health Service, such as Intensive Care, Accident & Emergency and Mount Carmel Hospital. Nurses are deployed according to their experience and training. Medicare also has a bank of psychiatrically trained nurses.
Medicare Services currently supplies nursing services to the Corradino Correctional Facilty. The facility has over 400 inmates, both male and female, of ages varying from 16 to 80, with various medical, surgical and psychiatric disorders. In the clinic nurses deal with a myriad of emergencies ranging from small cuts and bruises to cardiac care to attempted suicides. The clinic is a first line unit which caters for all types of injuries and emergencies.
From 2007 to date Medicare has provided medical (2007 to date) and nursing (2007 – 2008) staff to the Refugee camps under contract to the Armed Forces of Malta. Moreover Medicare was engaged by Fondazzjoni Suret il-Bniedem to run a medical service (doctor and nurse) on a pilot basis to the Marsa Open Centre since September 2008.
Care Workers
Medicare was the sole provider of care workers to Mount Carmel Hospital between November 2005 and May 2007. The service offered was utilised in all of Mount Carmel’s areas of responsibility namely in the hospital wards, in day centers and in occupational therapy. In 2006 Medicare Services supplied nursing and care-working staff for the temporary manning of the Asylum Seekers Unit at Mount Carmel Hospital. Psychiatric nurses were deployed for the management of this highly sensitive ward. Presently Medicare supplies domiciliary care worker service to private clients.
Health Maintenance
Medicare is currently responsible for over 10000 employees in private firms, parastatal corporations and government departments, Medicare provides 24/7 medical cover, including:
- Domiciliary sickness verification and treatment of sick employees
- Pre employment staff screening - Medical examinations inclusive of physical, urinalysis and examination of the external auditory canal and the tympanic membrane and report
- Ongoing staff health maintenance: medical check-ups, eyesight testing (incl. vision test with or without glasses, ocular posture and motility examination, Stereopsis test, Colour Vision test ), audiometry, spirometry, vaccination
- Onsite medical clinics manned by doctors and occupational nurses
- Up to the minute advice, consultancy and training on medical HR and OHS matters to management and staff
- Representation on company and state medical boards; specialist assessments
In our absence management programme episodes of sickness absence are managed from day one, so that absence is measured and monitored and resources are quickly mobilised, delivering timely diagnosis and treatment for rapid recovery and return to work.
Medicare also assists HR managers to establish:
- Immediate availability, to line managers, of data on the causes, frequency and cost of absence
- Clear policies, protocols and procedures to follow for specific events or symptoms
- Coordination and timely engagement of the primary stakeholders – employees, line managers and the HR department
Service packages are tailored to meet the requirements of a range of corporate clients. Medicare’s staff bank places it in a unique position to provide nation-wide cover, including Gozo. Medicare has also invested in a unique state of the art web-enabled database which provides round the clock, continually updated confidential staff data and statistics to senior HR.
All employee data is held in electronic archives subject to data protection legislation. Medicare is also in the process of achieving ISO 9001 – 2000 certification.
Medicare Services Ltd. is a very dynamic company with very good employee-employer relationships and low staff churn ratios. Despite our large operative staff bank we are proud that we have never engaged in industrial litigation. We are very conscientious of our obligations to our employees and maintain very good relationships with them.
We are also at the forefront of the health maintenance training sector and work closely with constituted bodies such as the Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise and the Malta Employers Association in this regard.
